How To Unclog a Toilet

A clogged toilet is one of the most frustrating plumbing problems a homeowner can face. Whether it’s due to too much toilet paper, a toy gone rogue, or just bad luck — we’ve all been there. Before you call a plumber, try these simple DIY methods to unclog your toilet and get things flowing smoothly again.

The classic tool still works wonders.

  • Use a flange plunger (the one with a funnel-like bottom).

  • Ensure there’s enough water in the bowl to cover the plunger head.

  • Place the plunger over the drain hole and push down firmly, then pull up quickly — repeat 10-15 times.

💡 Pro tip: Plunge vigorously but keep a good seal for the best results.

2. Hot Water & Dish Soap

Gentle but effective for minor clogs.

  • Pour a generous amount of dish soap into the bowl.

  • Heat a gallon of water (not boiling) and pour it in.

  • Wait 15–20 minutes and try flushing.

This method can lubricate the clog and help it slide through.

3. Use a Toilet Auger (Plumbing Snake)

Perfect for deeper or stubborn clogs.

  • Insert the auger into the toilet bowl.

  • Crank the handle to break up or hook the clog.

  • Pull the auger out carefully and flush to test.

Avoid using metal coat hangers as they may scratch your toilet.

4. Try Baking Soda & Vinegar

Natural and safe chemical reaction.

  • Pour 1 cup of baking soda into the bowl.

  • Follow with 2 cups of vinegar.

  • Let it fizz and sit for 30 minutes, then flush with hot water.

5. Wet/Dry Vacuum (Advanced)

Caution: Only use if you're comfortable with the mess.

  • Remove water from the bowl with the vacuum.

  • Wrap a towel around the hose to create a seal.

  • Push it into the drain and turn it on to suck out the clog.

When to Call a Plumber

If none of these methods work, or if you notice repeated clogs, it’s time to call in the pros. Frequent clogs might signal a deeper plumbing issue.
